Another "mom" word

TARNATION. There's a word that I learned from my mom. It's interesting the things we pick up. I also sometimes find myself falling into a southern drawl when I'm talking silly to the kids...and I'm not sure why that makes what I'm saying any funnier or nicer than normal.

Why do we say things?

I was sitting here thinking about what to blog today and my son and I decided to play some Mario Cart. I finished and exclaimed, "Wow! I won that one by the skin of my teeth." and his reply was, "Did the skin of your teeth help?"

It made me stop and think about some other sayings that have confused him lately. One of which came from Flushed Away in which Roddy says, "When the cat's away, the mice will play!" He was confused as to whether the characters were mice or rats. I think we've decided they're mostly rats. That one is still open for debate though.

Another thing I often say to him is "Sorry, Charlie" or "No Way, Jose" which of course gets a "My name isn't Charlie!" and so forth. One I got from my father was "Bedtime for Bonzo." How cheezy is that? I really try not to say "Bonzo" as much as I say "Bedtime for my boys." Still...I'm thinking it! It's in my head! Some crazy Ronald Reagan movie with a chimp in it!

I'm turning into my mother.

My mother often said things like, "Goodnight Nurse! It' looks like hurricane Hannah hit in here! Gosh Almighty!" and other things that I can't think of right now but will come to mind the next time I'm upset at a mess or having dropped a cup of orange juice on the hardwood floors. I guess it's better than the alternative but it drives me crazy!
